so I was getting ready to write an open letter and decided that before I called it such I should really know the exact definition of the phrase*. so off to google I went and while, yes the wikipedia entry was the first result, I also came across this little gem .

I suppose my fascination it not dissimilar to The Internet's obsession with PostSecret (which I've never been to before now, but had to go in order to get the link -you're welcome)** and sites of similar ilk.

At any rate, I'm now addicted and will be spending more time than I should reading these little insights into others' worlds.

*I'm weird like that.

** and damnit, I just got sucked into reading that one, too. but not too much. just enough to know that this one is probably going to be my favorite.

for residents of Harris County, TX:
early voting began today
get out there STAT

go to harrisvotes.com and mouse over "voting information" and select "early voting info" -> "2008 elections" to get a .pdf of where you can go and when.

DO IT.

If you registered late and didn't get a card, early voting will be the easiest since most early voting locations will have internet access to double check here to see if you are in the system (hint, you can check there yourself right now).

...hilarious actually...
so I was listening to the Astros game on my way home from work last night and the announcer made a point of spelling the Pirates' pitcher's name. You don't usually hear that, a spelling of a last name during a baseball broadcast. At first I thought, well maybe I never noticed, but it's probably to help people who are scoring the game. But now I think it was probably because the guy's name sounds an awful lot like "tu madre," which isn't such a nice phrase in Spanish. For those who are keeping score at home, his name is Dumatrait (due-mah-trey).

The other thing I found amusing was I'm pretty sure the announcer described the Pirates' uniform just so he could say "big yellow P swashed across the front." Seriously, dude starts by letting us know the Pirates are wearing their white uniforms and then goes on to describe what these guys are wearing in great detail. He was obviously trying to entertain himself.

Houston people need to go to Traders' Village on Sunday the 18th and check this out:

Sheryl Oring is marking the President's 60th Birthday (July 6, 2006) with an interactive performance called "The Birthday Project." She will be setting up a portable "birthday party" in public spaces and inviting passers by to send George W. Bush a birthday wish. She will type their thoughts onto specially created birthday cards and then mail them to the President.

By presenting this work in public spaces, where she feels art is unexpected, she hopes to reach audiences that do not normally have an opportunity to interact with art or speak their mind.

I would like to start with how proud I am of the entire city of Houston. This week has made me more proud of Houston than I ever imagined. We have stepped up to the plate. We decided to offer shelter to the evacuees at the dome and in under 24 hours we were ready with cots, water, food and desperately needed medical attention. We showed FEMA how it's done. My city rocks!

Yes, I've donated money. Yes, I will be bringing clothes to drop points. But, I also wanted to share what the company I work for is doing. In another post, I mentioned that EV1 offered help to DirectNIC so that their customers would be able to maintain their online presence. You may be thinking "screw online presence, people are dying." Yes, they are and I cannot help them. What I can do is try to help minimize collateral damage. Thousands of companies depend on internet presence. Some of those companies are online through DirectNIC. If DirectNIC is offline, so are their clients. If their clients cannot do business it means that there are that many more people harmed by this horrible situation. So I asked EV1 to help and from what I understand we have helped in a few ways (we were even thanked on Interdictor's LJ Site ).

EV1 has also been asked to donate a server that will be used as a database of information for the evacuees. [info]eerok got that set up Friday at work. I have volunteered to do data entry for the people organizing this database and will let you know if/when I find out more information about this project.

I think it's fabulous that [info]weebabe and Stephanie have done what they have done/are doing what they are doing. And I am in awe of what madmalik ([info]madmalik) has done/is doing.

When my dad worked for the Houston Chamber of Commerce (now the Greater Houston Partnership) they started a slogan for the city "Houston Proud". So, all this entry is just to say that I am proud of this great city...I am definitely "Houston Proud."

Hey all you expressive types and even those of you who just want to be expressive,

dexla is organizing an evening of collected performances. The goal is to gather together a variety of people who want to share their reflections of the collective consciousness, reactions to life, or anything else you feel like sharing with a few kindred spirits, and whoever else might happen to stop by.

This will be a safe-space, so critics stay home, everyone else on the other hand bring your mind, your voice, your movement, your paintings, sculptures, living installations, video installations, montages, collages, devised/experimental/live art pieces, durational performances, site specific performances, photographs, films, maracas, back up singers, poetry, spoken word, upright basses, drum sets, and whatever else you need to express what you want to get out there.

time and place tba

more details to come soon.

So....who's in?

This journal has two aspects, two personas if you will...

The public postings will pertain to the activities of "dexla", a term I am using to refer to being curator of/creating of performance studies salons/workshops/gatherings/discussions.

The private postings will be private musings I wish to share with my friends...sorry about having to keep some things closer to my chest, but a] the whole world is not interested in my personal life and b] I'm more than a little leery of those who do not know me who are interested in my personal life.

Oh, and if you know me and want me to add you as a friend, please post a comment so I know to add you.
